THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT × Anya Taylor-Joy
This was my second exploration of the theme from The Queen’s Gambit. The stark contrast of the black-and-white chessboard remains an excellent subject for ink sketching practice. However, this time, I transformed the flat board into a rhythmic 3D structure by varying the heights of the squares, creating a visually compelling composition. I maximized the contrast by positioning white pieces against a black background and vice versa, with the king and queen highlighted in dramatic duel positions. The image of Anya Taylor-Joy adorned in an opulent coat allowed me to experiment with rendering fur textures for the first time. The illustration’s primary flaw was the unnecessarily exaggerated background perspective, which proved challenging to depict with precision.
